Surfing is an extreme water sport involving riding ocean and sea waves on a surfboard. It originated from pre-modern Hawaii and has been widely adopted in the United States. One requires a surfboard, surf shoes, and surf gear, including goggles, shirts, shorts, and gloves. However, it is advisable to train with professional schools, to learn basics such as board balancing and following the wind before heading out to the sea.
Windsurfing, kitesurfing, and wakeboarding are popular surfing types. Windsurfing involves riding waves using the wind on a surfboard with an attached sail. Kitesurfing requires a kite that uses wind power to pull the surfer on a moving wave. With wakeboarding, a motorboat with a fastened rope tows a surfer balancing on a surfboard.
The best time to surf is at dusk or dawn. This sport requires strong winds and rising waves. In the morning and evening hours, winds blow from the land to the water, creating high-rising waves. Novice surfers should use foam surfboards, while children should get motorized surfboards to help master balancing skills.
