Difference Between Reconstructive and Cosmetic Plastic Surgery
Dr. Norman Rowe is a surgeon with a private practice in New York. He is a board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Norman Rowe has also published medical articles. One of them explores The Autologous Internal Rest Splint, a novel technique for treating breast ptosis. In his practice as a plastic surgeon, he focuses on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.
Plastic surgery is divided into two: reconstructive plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery. This is why it is sometimes wrong to use those two terms interchangeably-nonetheless, both types of plastic surgery attempt to improve a person’s physique generally.
Reconstructive plastic surgery focuses on the face and bodily deformities caused by illnesses, burns, or congenital disabilities. It focuses on reconstructing defective parts of the body.
However, cosmetic plastic surgery focuses on improving a person who may not necessarily be deformed or ill. Cosmetic surgery can be on almost any body part, including the face, chest, and neck.
Perhaps one of the most significant differences between reconstructive plastic surgery and cosmetic plastic surgery is whether it is an elective or an emergency procedure. Reconstructive plastic surgery is either an elective or emergency, meaning that the patient elects to have it or is crucial for the patient’s treatment. On the other hand, cosmetic surgery is always a selected procedure, meaning the patient chooses to do it even when it is not required.
