A board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Norman Rowe has headed his own private plastic and reconstructive surgery practice in New York City since 2004. One of the highlights of Dr. Norman Rowe’s career is developing the autologousinternal breast splint method for the treatment of breast ptosis.

Working with his colleague Dr. Robert Freund, he pioneered this novel surgical technique to address breast ptosis (drooping) in patients with breast implants. Previous methods of addressing this problem included opting for larger implants, performing a mastopexy, or suturing the capsule’s posterior leaf to the pectoralis major muscle.

Autologous internal breast splinting offered another alternative. The procedure involves elevating the posterior capsule from either the pectoralis major muscle or the anterior chest wall by suturing to both the posterior and anterior leaf of the capsule in a “sandwich” approach.

“The Autologous Internal Breast Splint: A Novel Technique for the Treatment of Postaugmentation Ptosis” announced the positive results of this technique in the November 2005 issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal. Analyzing the procedure’s effects on 11 ptosis patients, this article deemed autologous internal breast splinting an effective way to medialize and elevate the implant and the breast as a whole.
